Health & Safety Advisor – Groundworks (Birmingham) Culture not clipboards
“Because safety done properly isn’t about ticking boxes and clipboards — it’s about culture.”
Remember when “’Elf & Safety” was the punchline to every pub joke from the lads on site?
The Inbetweeners were shouting “bus w***ers” and everyone still used a BlackBerry.
Thing is, the world’s moved on.
Health & Safety isn’t the clipboard police (no one wants to be ‘policed’) anymore. It’s the difference between a business that just gets by and one that builds properly, grows safely, and sends everyone home in one piece.
This contractor gets it.
They’re one of the Midlands’ best-established groundworks businesses — not a start-up, not a dinosaur. Just a grown-up company doing serious commercial projects across the region. Think roads, drainage, infrastructure, retail, industrial and commercial projects — the stuff that keeps diggers busy and directors happy.
They’ve built their reputation on looking after people — staff, clients, and subcontractors. Not with gimmicks, beanbags and free smoothies, but with respect, development, and leaders who actually know your name and are approachable enough for you to speak to.
Crazy, eh…
They’re looking for a Health & Safety Advisor who sees the job for what it really is: part educator, part detective, part construction conscience part grown-up in the room.
And it’s important people feel you’re on their side.
You’ll spend time on live sites, working with site teams to build standards, not just tick boxes. You’ll spot issues before they become incidents. You’ll help supervisors understand the why, not just the what.
You won’t be fighting uphill either — the culture’s already there.
It’s a business where the MD can walk a site without being flanked by a PR handler, and the lads on the ground don’t roll their eyes when H&S turns up.
You’ll work closely with a senior safety manager who’s big on mentoring and wants to see you progress — whether that’s towards regional responsibility, chartership, or future leadership.
The role will be office based in Birmingham with visits to sites in the East and West Midlands.
The kit’s decent, the communication’s clear, and the expectations are adult.
If you’ve got a good construction background — ideally in civils or groundworks — and a NEBOSH General or Construction cert, you’ll hit the ground running.
They’re offering a solid salary, company car or allowance, and a role where you’re trusted to do the job properly.
This isn’t a “tick-sheet” H&S gig. It’s a proper advisory role where you’ll influence projects, shape culture, and get recognised for it.
If you’ve had enough of being the token safety presence wheeled out after an incident — and fancy joining a business that actually believes prevention is better than paperwork —
this might be your next move.
