Senior Quantity Surveyor / Quantity Surveyor — Commercial Groundworks

(Good work. Good people. No drama.)

Some jobs sound good on paper. This one actually is good on paper — because you’ll be the one keeping it that way.

A well-established, financially strong groundworks and civils contractor is growing steadily across the commercial and industrial sectors — offices, retail developments, and industrial sites. The pipeline’s solid, the relationships are long-term, and the margins are earned the proper way: through graft, reputation and good management, not low-balling tenders.

They’re after a Senior QS (or strong QS ready to step up) who wants to be part of that next stage — not lost in layers of management or stuck pricing the same schemes on repeat. Someone who likes their numbers accurate, their projects organised, and their work recognised.

The Role

You’ll manage the commercial side of multiple live projects — from tender through to final account. You’ll handle subcontractor procurement, valuations, change control, forecasting and reporting, with full visibility across programme and delivery.

You won’t be a spreadsheet hermit either — this is a hands-on QS role. You’ll be out on site when you need to be, dealing directly with PMs, engineers and clients. Real collaboration, not email tennis.

And you’ll have autonomy. They don’t do micromanagement here. You’ll be trusted to run your own work, use your judgement, and make decisions.

If you’ve ever sat in a meeting thinking, “We could’ve sorted this in a two-minute call,” you’ll fit in nicely.

Office base is Birmingham with visits to sites in the East and West Midlands.

What You’ll Get

Security — a cash-rich business with repeat clients and a strong forward order book. You won’t be wondering what’s next every quarter.

Progression — they’re expanding, and good commercial people move up quickly. There’s a clear route to Commercial Manager if that’s your next step.

Support — you’ll have the backup of experienced project and site teams who actually understand the value of a good QS.

Balance — they work hard but don’t burn people out. The culture’s adult, not corporate — expectations are high, but so is respect.

You’ll get the satisfaction of working somewhere that values doing things properly, not cutting corners for the sake of a spreadsheet.

What You’ll Bring

You’ll already be running or assisting on commercial groundworks jobs — offices, retail parks, industrial units, car parks, distribution yards, that sort of thing. You’ll know the drill: keeping programmes tight, managing subbies, juggling clients, and still having enough humour left to make it through Friday.

You’re decisive, steady under pressure, and you don’t need your hand held. You understand the commercial side as well as the operational — and you know that the best QSs keep both in sync.

Why It’s Worth a Chat

Because not every QS role has to feel like a battle.
This one’s about doing the job properly — supported, respected, and with a path forward.

Solid company. Decent leadership. Clear progression.
No chaos. No politics. No waffle.

Just a chance to do your best work and get somewhere with it.
