Senior Quantity Surveyors – “You Were Only Supposed to Blow the Bloody Doors Off!” …Not still be chasing variations at 6pm on a Friday.

Let’s not do the usual fluff.

You’re a Senior Quantity Surveyor.

You know groundworks. You’ve measured more linear metres of drainage than you’d care to remember.

You’ve had it up to your neck in VO negotiations, chased retentions until you’re blue in the face, and still somehow get dragged into value engineering meetings that could’ve been emails.

Now you’re wondering:

  • Is this actually going anywhere anytime soon?

  • Will I ever move past being the person who fixes everyone else’s screw-ups?

  • Can I just work somewhere normal, with grown-ups who get it?

This is that place.

The Company

Growing groundworks contractor. Residential-focused. They work with big-name developers – the kind building actual houses, not just submitting planning apps and stalling.

They’re in that sweet spot – big enough to win proper jobs, small enough that decisions get made in minutes, not months after a ton of pain.

Flat structure. Tight leadership team. No corporate waffle.

You deal with directors who are people, not “regional corporate alignment managers”.

They’re growing.

Which means opportunity – not just more work, but real progression for those with drive who are up for it. Commercial Manager seats don’t stay empty forever. Neither do Directorships.

The Role

You’ll be the lead QS on groundwork packages for residential sites.

Office base is West Midlands with sites in the West Midlands area.

Sewers, roads, footings – the usual suspects.

You’ll run your own jobs from start to finish: pricing, client interface, CVRs, final accounts, and everything in between.

You’ll work closely with ops, bring your own ideas, and have room to actually shape things. No death-by-spreadsheet, no commercial babysitting.

Flexible working? Yes.

Seen as a grown-up? Definitely.

Micromanagement? Not a chance.

The Deal

  • Salary it’ll improve your lifestyle and won’t insult your intelligence
  • Car/allowance – bells and whistles if you like but flexibility to pocket the difference if cars aren’t your thing
  • Pension that’s not just for show
  • Real flexibility (school run? Done. Working from home to sort a final account? Crack on.)
  • Clear progression if you want it
  • Bosses who actually listen
  • Zero tolerance for bullsh*t

You’ll Need

  • To be a Senior QS (or strong Intermediate ready to step up)
  • Groundworks experience (residential is gold dust)
  • Decent client manner, solid subcontractor management, sharp commercial instincts whilst still being a human
  • Sense of humour and some site scars

So, what’s the plan?

Stick it out where you are, hoping someone retires?

Keep hoping things will be different after the next round of broken promises?

Or take the step into something sharper, faster, and less… painful with more of a future?

If you’re still reading, you already know the answer. Don’t you…

So…

Let’s have a chat.

I’m expecting you might not be active in the job market so 100% confidentiality and discretion is assured.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got an up-to-date CV for now it’s not that important. Everyone who gets in touch will get a response. Civils Senior Talent and our partner clients are equal opportunity employers.
